Zoom Lens
A zoom lens is a type of lens that enables a photographer to change the size of the image that is recorded by the lens. This is accomplished by moving the lens inside the camera body.
A zoom lens lets you change the focal length of your camera, depending on what you are shooting. You can take pictures and videos that would otherwise be impossible. For example, a zoom lens makes it easy to get close up shots of flowers, wildlife, buildings, landscapes, your dog, and so on.
For most smartphones and point and shoot cameras, you can switch between different lenses that come with the camera.
However, not all zoom lenses fit all smartphones and point and shoot cameras. Most smartphones have built in zoom lenses. However, you still need a zoom lens if you want to use the widest angle. Most point and shoot cameras have a fixed lens. You have to buy a separate one if you want to zoom in.
If you are using a smartphone, it is also possible to purchase a zoom lens separately. A small portable zoom lens can be used to extend the zoom on your phone. These can be found online or in high street stores. You can also invest in a tripod for your smartphone so you can take long exposures for night photography.
If you are a keen amateur photographer, you might want to consider buying a dedicated camera with a zoom lens. It will be easier to keep track of which lenses are best for each type of photo and you will probably get more professional looking pictures.
When do you need a zoom lens?
Use your zoom.
Using your zoom lens can be a real advantage. If you’re photographing a group, you can take a picture of each person separately or all together. Zoom can also make photography easy in certain situations. For instance, if you have a landscape with lots of detail, zoom in until the details look clear. Then you can stop down to reduce the amount of light coming into the camera, which can cause the shot to be blurry.
Use your zoom to take pictures of far away objects.
If you are photographing a large subject, such as a building, zoom in until the edges of the image start to blur and then stop down to reduce the amount of light coming into the camera. You’ll be surprised how much of the subject you can fit into one picture, while still having a good view of the background.
Use your zoom to photograph a smaller object.
If you are photographing a small object, such as a flower, zoom in until the subject fills the screen and then stop down to reduce the amount of light coming into the camera.

If you are photographing a fast-moving object, such as a running child, zoom in to capture the moment. Then stop down to reduce the amount of light coming into the camera, so you can get the perfect shot.
