What Is a Flash Diffuser?

Flash diffuser

A flash diffuser is a piece of equipment used in photography that spreads light over a larger area. This is useful for shooting photographs in low light conditions, or for creating a more even light distribution over a larger area.

The diffuser may be used with or without the use of a reflector, and is often referred to as an umbrella diffuser. It is also sometimes known as a “sunshade”, “soft box”, “clamp-on diffuser”, “cable diffuser”, “flash diffuser”, “diffusion filter”, “light guide” or “lightbox”. Flash diffusers are commonly used in professional studio photography, but can also be used in other applications such as in architectural photography, product photography, event photography, and so on.

How to use a flash diffuser for photography

All you need to do is to put the flash diffuser over the flash.

1. Open the flash diffuser.

2. Place the diffuser over the flash head.

3. Adjust the flash output to the desired level.

4. Take photos.

The light from the flash reflects off the back of the diffuser causing it to appear brighter than if no diffuser was used.

Diffusers are available in various shapes, sizes and thicknesses. It is best to buy a diffuser specifically designed for the type of flash you are using.

For a studio portrait, a diffuser is essential for creating a pleasing look.

If you are using the flash as part of a tripod set-up, you may prefer to use a diffuser that is fastened on the top of the flash head.
