How to Choose a Wedding Photographer

Take it slowly.

It’s tempting to rush into finding the right wedding photographer. Most of us would like to think that we know everything there is to know about weddings, but in reality there are many areas of a wedding day that we don’t have experience of, such as having a professional photographer capturing all the moments, or a stylist to give you the perfect look. Wedding photographers are different. Some take hundreds of photographs in one sitting, while others may prefer to be selective and capture only the key shots.

Think about your personality.

Think about how you feel about the photographer you are looking at. Do you like him/her? What sort of personality do you think suits your style? Do you feel comfortable with him/her? How do you imagine the wedding day will unfold?

Think about your budget.

How much do you want to spend? Do you have enough money? Are you prepared to pay extra for quality work? Think about how much money you want to spend in total, how much you are prepared to spend per person and whether you are prepared to spend more than you can afford.

Ask lots of questions.

Ask lots of questions – don’t hesitate to ask for referrals. Ask the wedding photographer how long he has been working as a professional. Ask about his style of work. Ask how many weddings he has photographed and what percentage of the weddings he has taken. Ask if he will be taking stills.

Consider your other commitments.

It can be very hard to leave your loved ones on your wedding day. It’s important to consider whether you are able to fit in time with your close family and friends. If you are expecting a baby it can be tricky to organise anything but this may be the only time you have to enjoy your wedding day.

Think about the location of the wedding.

Think about where you would like to get married. Where does your heart lie? Do you prefer a location that is rural or city? Is the location important to your guests? Does it have special significance to your family? Is it somewhere you can imagine spending your wedding night?

Make sure you discuss these factors with your partner.

Do you both agree on what you want? It is important that the two of you are in agreement. And discuss all your ideas with your photographer to have the best shoots.

Think about what you want.

What do you want to capture? Think about the overall feel of the wedding day. Think about how you want to feel. Do you want to be relaxed and happy? Or are you more focused on the details of the day, like the bridal bouquet?

It is also important to think about your family, who will be there to support you on your special day. Do you want photos of your parents and grandparents at your wedding? What will you want to capture in terms of your love story?
