Headshot Poses: Best Tips and Examples

Simplify your headshot posing and save your money.

Your first thought will be that you need to hire a professional photographer to shoot your headshots. That’s fine, but you don’t need a full session, either. Try using just a few poses. For example, have fun with a few self-portraits. You can make up stories for each pose and write your own captions. Don’t forget to include your name. This will allow you to look back on your portfolio and remind you how much you enjoyed creating these images.

Try new things.

In order to create fresh and exciting poses, you need to experiment. Have a go at making up poses on your own, then try them out on your headshot session. If they don’t work, use your imagination to invent something else. This can mean lying down, sitting with your hands on your face, doing a yoga pose, standing with your hands in the air, or doing some weird dance move. When you’re happy with the pose, ask the photographer to take the shot.

Don’t be afraid to use props.

If you want to add a touch of personality to your headshot poses, use props. The best place to start is with your camera. For instance, you can make use of the built-in flash, position it above your face, point it at a wall behind you, or shoot in close-up mode. You can also get creative with a plain sheet of paper, a flower or other pretty object, and a piece of clothing you wear regularly.

Show off your skills.

Make sure that your poses are interesting and that you display your natural talent. The more you play around with different styles of photography, the more confident you will feel.

Take time to edit your shots.

Once you have taken a number of photos, choose a few and use your computer or smartphone to edit them. Use the editing software’s features to bring out the best in your images. You can add a filter, adjust the brightness and contrast, or add shadows and highlights. Look at the final results to see if they are giving the image the style you want.

Tip: You can also print your pictures at home. Just remember to keep your photos from a previous session, as you will not be able to change them.
