What Is Optical Zoom?

Optical zoom is the ability of your camera to magnify or reduce the size of an object. A larger zoom means you can get closer to a subject without losing detail, but there are limitations.

When you take a photo, your camera uses a lens to focus on the subject. That means that the part of the picture that is closest to you is in sharp focus while the parts that are further away are blurred out. If you want a close-up of something, it helps to zoom in, or move closer. The same is true for taking a picture of a person. If you are far away, your subject will appear fuzzy and blurry, like the picture below.
