What is Spot Metering? And how can you use it for better photos?

spot metering

Spot Metering is a feature in many cameras that enables the photographer to set an area of the frame to be completely or partially exposed for each shot. This can be useful to help avoid over- or underexposing a shot and can also help keep shutter speed constant throughout the whole image.

Many cameras have this option but don’t use it as much as they could. And even if you have a camera that does allow you to spot meter, you might not use it as much as you should. It can be hard to work out exactly how to use Spot Metering, especially when there are so many things that you need to consider before taking the photo.

They also have a useful application in architecture photography, where buildings or other architectural elements can be photographed from unusual angles that would not be possible with a standard lens.

Use wide-angle lens to shoot from the hip, and you’ll get a much more compelling image. … Read the rest

Optical vs Digital Zoom (Which One Should You Use?)

35mm-vs-50mm

camera zoom

What Is Optical Zoom?

Optical zoom is the ability of your camera to magnify or reduce the size of an object. A larger zoom means you can get closer to a subject without losing detail, but there are limitations.

When you take a photo, your camera uses a lens to focus on the subject. That means that the part of the picture that is closest to you is in sharp focus while the parts that are further away are blurred out. If you want a close-up of something, it helps to zoom in, or move closer. The same is true for taking a picture of a person. If you are far away, your subject will appear fuzzy and blurry, like the picture below.

For example, if you have a 400mm lens, you can only take pictures at about 200mm, and even then, there’s some distortion.

mirrorless camera

The history of the mirrorless camera is not nearly as interesting as the history of the compact camera. But it is interesting to note that the first mirrorless camera was invented by Olympus in 2000.
