Best Tips and Ideas to Process Macro Photography for Stunning Results

Processing your macro images should be done to make sure that you will have great photos for your clients and business. Here we give you some suggestions on how to apply the editing tips into your own work. And some steps provided here are mostly based on using Photoshop. Photoshop is very good when it comes to photo editing and manupulation. We recommend that you use it for your photography business.

Adjust Exposure

Macro photography requires careful exposure, and there is no one right way to process it. However, there are basic steps that will make your images look much more professional and less grainy than they would otherwise.

• The first step is to set your camera to manual exposure (not auto).

• Second, use your camera’s light meter to determine the correct exposure.

• After you have taken your photo, open the image in Photoshop.

• Now, choose Edit > Enhance > Correct Lighting. This tool will let you set white balance, lighting, and contrast.

• Finally, choose Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen to brighten and smooth the photo.

Brighten Image

If your image is dark and grainy, you can try to brighten it up using the Sharpen filter.

You will see the image become brighter and cleaner, but you should make sure to adjust the settings to get the desired result.

Contrast

Contrast is the difference between black and white. It can be adjusted in two ways: by altering your image’s brightness and by increasing or decreasing the amount of black and white in an image.

• Increasing contrast makes the image appear more vivid and dramatic.

• Decreasing contrast makes the image appear softer and more muted.

To increase contrast, go to Adjustments > Curves. The image should look more dynamic and bold.

To decrease contrast, go to Image > Adjustments > Levels. The image should become a little darker and more muted.

Remove Noise

Noise is small areas of pixelation that appear in your image. This occurs because your camera does not focus on a specific area of your photo.

Noise can make your image appear grainy and unsharpened.

There are many different techniques you can use to remove noise, including:

• Sharpening.

• Filters.

• Using a High Pass.

• Using Blur and Sharpen.

• Using Clarity.

• Using Shadows/Highlights.

For removing noise from an image, you can choose Edit > Select > Modify > Expand. This will allow you to make adjustments to the individual pixels of the image.

To remove noise, go to Edit > Select > Modify > Expand. The pixels will expand to fill up the whole area.

Create Depth

Depth in an image creates a sense of space and gives it a three-dimensional appearance. It can be created by blurring the background of an image.

To blur the background, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use a large setting to blur the background to create depth.

Adjust Brightness and Saturation

Saturation refers to the overall color of an image. It can be increased to make the image appear more vibrant.

Saturation can also be altered using the saturation slider. The slider is located on the top left side of the window. Move it to the left to decrease the saturation and to the right to increase it.

Adjusting the slider will increase or decrease the saturation in the image.

Clean Up

Once you have edited your image, you may want to clean it up a little bit.

To clean up the image, go to Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights. If the image needs more shadow, move the slider to the left.

If the image needs more highlight, move the slider to the right.

Adjust Colors

Colors can be adjusted using the Curves tool.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Curves. Adjust the curves to increase or decrease the brightness and saturation.

This is another way to increase the color in an image.

Add a Splash

Splashes of color are great for making an image pop. They can be used to add interest to a scene, and they are also a great way to dress up a plain photo.

Merge Layers

If you need to merge two layers, such as a background layer with the foreground, you can do it easily by going to Layer > Merge Visible.

Merging the layers will combine the contents of the two layers into one.

You can also merge layers to make them transparent.

For this, simply choose Layer > Blend > Opacity.

A layer is considered transparent if the percentage is zero.

To make a layer transparent, go to Layer > Blend > Opacity.

Adjust Color

To make the image brighter or to give it a particular color, you can use the Hue/Saturation adjustment.

Go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation.

This tool lets you adjust the colors in the image, and it will also let you adjust the overall brightness of the image.
