How do you photograph an eye?
Take photos of an eye, rather than of someone’s face. This will help to show the shape and structure of the eyeball. There are several ways of doing this.
The simplest is to use the flash, and turn it off so that you are not photographing reflected light. Then point the camera straight at the eye and take a series of shots. You will need to experiment to find the best distance at which the eye appears sharp and with maximum detail.
Alternatively, turn the camera sideways so that you are looking through the viewfinder, but with the lens pointed at the eye. Take a few shots. Remember to remove any glasses or contact lenses before taking the photos.
If you are working with an old camera, you may find that you need to take the camera away from the eye. Move it around the head so that the subject isn’t blocked by the lens.
Another alternative is to use a telephoto lens. This is particularly useful when you are taking photos of animals with big eyes. Use the ‘long exposure’ setting and point the camera at the eye. The lens will make the eye appear much larger than it really is.

The easiest way to look your best when taking photos is to avoid squinting, making sure your eyes are well opened. Look down for photos taken at a slant and tilt your head up for those taken straight on.
